Shepard Fairey is one of my favorite graphic designers. I greatly admire his work, and his witty political satire that always strikes a nerve. His ability to reach people beyond the pretty pictures, and touch them with a message that forces the viewer to engage in conflict with their own ideals, is nothing short of amazing. To make people stop and think about the society in which they live in makes him one of the most important artist in recent history. Being a artist/skateboarder myself I really relate to Shepard and his messages.
This T-shirt is essentially a tribute to Shepard. It doesnt capture the face of a famous dictator, or a starving child, but instead it celebrates the lifestyle that we carry. Its a illustrated snap shot of everyday life that a person who wears Obey Clothing might have. So its meant for Obeys demographic of young urban professionals, who are politically and socially attuned to present issues.
The illustration really has no start or ending point. So it wraps itself around the torso in a circle. The three colors I picked are very contrastfull, and yet the complement each other. It displays the environment some of us are accustomed to, making it visible and loud so that who ever wears it is communicating his life style proudly to the world without ever saying a word.
