Description

This entire project started when Ms. Jennifer Pauley ( Head of the Graphic Design Department at I.A.D.T. Tampa) interrupted our regular scheduled class which was Environmental Graphics taught by Ms. Denise Haunstetter with a more important, real world / big client project that would give us much more experience then it could be taught in a class room scenario. She didn’t even tells who the client was since they move to Tampa was to be kept top-secret. After we showed up at the place , which was still under construction, we were told of what our part would be in
all this.

We had to design murals for the tall walls surrounding the inside of the open space office building, the best designs would be picked and somehow transferred to the wall as soon as possible since the overall construction and project completion was merrily a month away. They wanted to create a fun, happy, colorful, Google-esk type of environment, with elements of graffiti and street art. We had a week to come up with some design ideas that and have those ideas mounted so we could pitch them to Cott’s CEO, and another 3 weeks to execute the approved concept. The chosen designs would be put on the walls inside Cott’s headquarters building in Tampa. After we got the specs I spent nearly that entire week coming up with concepts and ideas as to how I would incorporate graffiti into a fun, colorful, and interesting piece that would not only bring more aesthetics to the work environment but at the same time make Cott’s employees happier and more productive. So I spent a lot of time researching graffiti and graffiti artists that I liked, and that I could draw inspiration from. One of those artist was a German called Daim.

Daim has been doing graffiti and painting since 1989 and has raised the bar to a entire new level as far as 3d lettering is concerned. His inspirations include photo-realism, Salvador Dali’s surrealistic work as well as Van Gogh’s play with light and shade.

After I had studied Daim’s work carefully I started to come up with ideas on how I would use this technique to achieve the objective of the design. I decided that each of the sequential four walls that I would incorporate this design into, would be a letter. Each wall would have a different color but all the colors chosen would be very alive and strong. Each wall would also carry an object that resembled one of the letters in the name “Cott”. So the first wall would be green with a C as the focus, the next would be of a different color and would have an O, so on and so forth. Since it was a beverage company I also incorporated some liquid spills and splashes that are arranged in a way that it looks like an explosion of colorful liquids all around the object/letter, which was the focus in each piece. That also gave a feeling of energy, intensity, happiness, creativity and inspiration that hopefully would reflect, or have some kind of positive affect on the performance of the employees.

The execution of this entire project occurred literally over-night. From beginning to end it took 9 hours, and it was all done the night before we had to have the project mounted and presented to the heads of Cott Beverages and other VIPs. Although it looks like it was done in a 3D software, everything was done in Illustrator, using masks and blends to give the 2D object the illusion that it’s 3D.

The only letter that I sketched out on paper was the “C” everything else was pretty much done straight in Illustrator using little reference to go by. Interestingly enough I wasn’t stressed at all during the entire night, I found out over the years that for some reason I find myself more calm, productive, and focused wile under pressure. The very next day I presented the freshly printed and mounted work to the interior designers and owners of York & Davis Design Firm, Cott’s CEO Brent Willis, and the head of the graphic design department of IADT Ms. Jennifer Pauley, accompanied of course by my professor Ms. Denise Haunstetter. They seemed to like it since they were willing to spend $5,000 to print it in a large format and have a professional mount it on their walls, when they were already over-budget for the entire remodeling of the interior of the building.

I can’t express how honored I feel to have my work displayed inside the third biggest beverage manufacture in the planet, soon to be the biggest <--- ass kissing here. I am so happy that everyone seemed to enjoy that piece, and I’m also humbled at the level of professionalism and dedication that everyone involved with the project had. It was an unbelievable experience and I’m extremely lucky to be involved with and be a part of. Hopefully we will get to do it again since everyone at Cott was so happy with the whole thing. During the inauguration they even asked us to start coming up with concepts for another section of the walls surrounding the inside of the place. Hopefully we can add another wall to our credit.
